What are the minimum requirements in Ontario to apply for a career in policing?

You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, at least 18 years old, physically and mentally able to perform the role, of good character, and meet training, human rights, and cultural awareness requirements under the Community Safety and Policing Act (CSPA). You also need a valid driver’s licence, Standard First Aid and CPR-C certification, and must pass background and security checks.

How long does it take to become a police officer?

The process typically takes 6 to 12 months. This includes applying, completing assessments like the OACP Certificate, interviewing, undergoing background checks and completing the 12-week Basic Constable Training at the Ontario Police College.

What is the Ontario Police College?

The Ontario Police College (OPC) is where new recruits receive foundational training. Only those hired by a police service may attend. The program includes academic instruction, physical training and scenario-based learning.

What kind of benefits can I expect as a police officer?

The OACP certificate

What is the OACP Certificate?

The OACP Certificate is a standardized pre-screening tool administered by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police. Many services in Ontario require it before you can apply.

Do all police services in Ontario require the OACP Certificate?

Many do, but not all. Always check the specific requirements of the service you’re applying to.

How do I obtain the OACP Certificate?

You can begin the process at oacpcertificate.ca, where you will register, complete forms, and undergo a series of assessments including cognitive and personality tests, a fitness log and medical documentation.

How much does the OACP Certificate cost?

The certificate currently costs $250 CAD, plus tax.

How long is the certificate valid?

It’s valid for one year. Re-testing is available after ten months if needed.

Training, fitness and readiness

What does the fitness test involve?

All recruits must pass the PREP (Physical Readiness Evaluation for Police) at the Ontario Police College. It includes a pursuit/restraint circuit, and a 20-metre shuttle run. Preparation should begin early in the application process.

How can I prepare for the physical test?

Start with consistent cardiovascular and strength training. You’ll also need to track a two-week fitness log as part of your OACP Certificate. Many applicants use practice PREP circuits or guidance from certified fitness professionals.

What kind of training do police officers receive?

Training covers law, ethics, de-escalation techniques, communication, mental health response, physical conditioning and scenario-based exercises. After graduating from the Ontario Police College, recruits continue their training within their police service, including approximately three months of on-the-job learning alongside a dedicated Coach Officer.

Will I be trained to handle mental health or crisis calls?

Yes. All recruits are trained in in communication, crisis response and de-escalation. This includes learning how to respond compassionately and safely in high-stress situations.
